"...Congressman Jim Saxton supported Burlington County’s application in a
letter to the NRCS noting that the buffer area will enhance the military
bases’ security, as well as national security.
“Preventing encroachment around our military bases is absolutely essential,”
said Saxton, a ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee who led
the fights to save Fort Dix and McGuire AFB from closure in the 1990s. “This
is another display of the willingness of local officials to do everything
they can to support our military community.
“ We have wide, open spaces of farmland, preserved forests and parklands
surrounding Fort Dix and McGuire AFB. With another round of base closures
set for 2005, the county’s drive to preserve even more tracts of land is
very well-timed,” Saxton added...."
