Statement of
Opposition to the Penn-Mar Ethanol plant in Cumberland Valley Business Park,
Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
We, the undersigned, are strongly opposed to the Penn-Mar Ethanol, LLC ethanol production plant to be located in the Cumberland Valley Business Park, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, for the following reasons:
Ethanol
plants are a proven source of air pollution, noxious odors, fire and
explosion hazards, and polluted wastewater.
Whether or not their intentions are good, ethanol
plants have been cited by State and Federal environmental agencies on
numerous occasions for violating State and Federal Clean Air and Water laws. Local, state, and the federal governments have filed lawsuits
against ethanol plants for numerous violations of air and water quality
laws.
The
known dangers from ethanol plants are so great that Penn-Mar has proposed an
evacuation plan that would require immediate evacuation of business
employees and residents within a 2.5 mile distance of the plant, and require
those within 5 miles of the plant to stay indoors in the event of an
“incident.”
An ethanol plant in the Cumberland Valley Business Park will significantly reduce the quality of life for area residents, lower commercial and residential real estate values in the area, and subject residents and employees for miles around the plant to air pollution, noxious odors, and the constant threat of evacuation.
For the above reasons, we request the Greene and Letterkenny Township
Supervisors, the Greene Township Planning Commission, the Commissioners of
Franklin County, the Franklin County Planning Commission, and the Pennsylvania
Department of Environmental Protection to determine that the proposed plant
cannot meet existing health, safety, and welfare laws and regulations, and
should not be located at the proposed site in the Cumberland Valley Business
Park.
