Paxair Explosion 6/24/2005
According to Penn-Mar Ethanol's plan approval application submitted to Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), page 2 of the Process Form, CO2 Plant, Praxair would be the "Manufacturer" of Penn-Mar's planned Carbon Dioxide (CO2) capture/bottle/ship system capable of producing 146,000 tons of CO2 per year, with an Operating Schedule of 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year (or 8,760 hours per year).
"Investigators
are exploring whether there needed to be better fire suppressing
systems in place at Praxair, and
whether neighbors should have been evacuated more
quickly...."
"Some neighboring houses were damaged by
flying burning canisters, and some vehicles were set on fire by
flying debris...."
"...after Missouri Governor Matt Blunt visited the site of
Friday's explosion, which rocked south St. Louis, Mayor Francis
Slay announced that he is discussing with Praxair officials the
possibility of moving their facility to a different, more remote
location.
Slay said, "After this incident, it's going to be very
difficult to convince, no matter what happens here, people that
live in this area, that this is a safe location...."
