WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) -- A fire broke
out today at an ethanol plant in West
Burlington.
Firefighters were called to the Big River
Resources LLC plant around 9:20 a.m. The fire
started in a bin that is used to dry animal
feed.
Officials say the bin is not located near any
stored ethanol or equipment used to process
ethanol. They classified the fire as a minor
one. Parts of the bin were still smoldering as
of noon.
Several neighboring fire departments were
called in to battle the fire. Two people -- a
plant worker and a firefighter -- suffered minor
injuries.
Roads around the plant were closed for about
an hour.
The plant officials started grinding corn on
April 12th, 2004, according to the company's Web
site. The plant, which operates seven days a
week, is designed to produce 40 million gallons
of ethanol per year.
